Bed Bugs in New York

From Times Square to Central Park, the Big Apple is certainly a tourist haven. But, New York is also famous for a critter that is slowly invading its famous landmarks- Bed Bugs!
In an article written by Ed Pilkington for the Guardian UK, bed bugs have been found in AMC movie theaters in Times Square and Harlem. Imagine yourself going into the theater looking for a good time while you are being eaten alive by bed bugs!
New York hotels are among the best in the world. They cater to families on vacation to movie stars in town to shoot their latest blockbuster. Movie star or not, bed bugs have been found to infest some hotels in the area. To attest to their love of retail, Bloomingdales, NikeTown, Victoria's Secret, Hollister and more also revealed their pest problem.
Since the creatures main mode of transfer is by hitchhiking, public transportation may also fall host to these parasites. Bed bugs stick to your bags, clothes, luggage, and sheets from any infested area and travel with you to your next destination. This is the main reason why tourists have expressed their concern about traveling to the City.
Bed bugs are small, oval shaped parasites that feed on human blood. They are nocturnal and feed on their slumbering hosts. They are often found in beds, but also in headboards, bed side tables, carpets and floor boards. It is hard to catch the culprit red-handed because the bites are painless. In short, you just know you have been bitten by them the morning after.
New York officials denied any mass cancellations of bookings and visits, although there has been an increased inquiry on the matter over at tripadvisor. New York has a $30 Billion tourism industry and it's sad that a little parasite can do even a little damage. It has yet to be proven if bed bugs are able to transmit diseases.
To shed light on things, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene have issued several educational pamphlets about bed bugs. They advise hotels to have a routine in inspecting all rooms for bed bugs. If a guest complains of bites, immediately offer a new room.
All used linens should be washed thoroughly in warm water and all furniture should be inspected for bed bug eggs and casing. Using a stiff brush, thoroughly go over mattresses and cushions. Also make sure to discard any cleaning materials as soon as you finish cleaning. Bed bugs are persistent parasites and it never hurts to be a little paranoid about them.
Hotels with visible cracks, loose wallpapers and floorboards need to be inspected regularly for bed bugs. New Yorkers certainly have their hands full with these critters!
